Joining the choir

FUCS is a non-auditioned choir which is mainly composed of students, staff, and alumni of the Flinders University. However, it is also open to members of the general public. It is affiliated with FlindersOne, the umbrella organisation for clubs and societies at the university.

FUCS is also a member of the Australian Intervarsity Choral Societies' Association (AICSA), which is a group of choirs based at universities throughout Australia. This means lots of big festivals to go to!

To join the choir, simply turn up to a rehearsal, where you may speak to a committee member. They'll be sure to give you all the information you're looking for.

Who can join FUCS?

Absolutely anyone! We don't audition, and we don't require you to be a Flinders student (or have even the vaguest connection with Flinders). All you have to do is simply turn up to a rehearsal. If you're feeling a little tentative, feel free to e-mail us first.

I'm scared... I've never sung in a choir/read music/performed in front of an audience before...

FUCS is in no way a professional choir. While we are lucky enough to be conducted and directed by music students or professionals, there are almost never any full-time musicians in the choir. The ability to read music, while helpful, is not necessary – we learn pieces quite slowly, and everyone is on the same page by the end of the process. Performing in front of audiences is fun, helps build confidence, and it will get easier the more performances you do!

Is there a membership fee?

There is a membership fee, which we try our hardest to keep as low as possible. Fees (also referred to as "subs") are $20 for students of any SA tertiary institution (this includes TAFE students), and $50 for non-students. If you wish to pay your fee in increments, let our treasurer know, and they'll help you come to an arrangement.

What are rehearsals like?

To prevent confusion, we've placed this information on this page.

What about concerts? What happens at these?

To prevent confusion, we've placed this information on this page.

What about things like caroling? I thought choirs loved caroling!

Oh, we do! If you're in town around November and December, you'll definitely be roped in to do some caroling, never fear! Announcements will be made on the subject closer to the date.

I still have questions...

We're impressed! Shoot us a line at choir[at]flindersclubs.asn.au, or turn up to a rehearsal and ask a committee member. It's what they're there for!
